Far South Community Development Corporation (Far South CDC) is embarking on a bold “Bringing Communities Back Initiative” (BCBI) to repurpose nearly 1 million square feet of blighted community areas into thriving community anchors that will spur economic growth and repopulate communities in Chicago’s far south side that have experienced decades of chronic disinvestment.
This initiative will focus on three goals:
Within the last five years, Far South CDC has raised more than $55 million in public and private investments for BCBI projects and programs, including:
City of Chicago - Dept of Planning & Development
City of Chicago - Dept of Housing
City of Chicago - Dept of Transportation
Illinois Housing Development Authority
Illinois Dept of Commerce & Economic Opportunity
Office of Attorney General
The Chicago Community Trust
Roseland Medical District
Justin Slaughter, 27th District State Rep
Emil Jones III, 14th District State Senator
Anthony Beale, 9th Ward Alderman - Chicago
Ronnie Mosley, 21st Ward Alderman - Chicago
The South Halsted Corridor on Chicago's far south side is the Gateway into the City. Each day, the corridor has more than 20,000 vehicular traffic, which includes more than four CTA and Pace Bus routes. The corridor - from 95th Street to 129th Street connects five neighborhoods, including Brainerd, Washington Heights, Roseland, Morgan Park, and West Pullman. Plus, the corridor is the connection to Interstate 57 and 80, has a Metra Train Terminal, and is home to more than 100 businesses and nonprofit organizations.
Recently, the corridor received its first public park development (POP! Heights Park) in more than 50 years through the City's Public Outdoor Plaza Program (POP). Far South CDC's goal is to redevelop the corridor by bringing viable and buildable projects that will increase the density, enhance the corridor experience, and have thriving retail/office businesses.

It is not enough to only advocate for new development to fill large vacancies in the neighborhoods. Far South CDC's goal is to renovate existing commercial and residential developments and infill new construction to reduce gapping holes in residential blocks with individuals and families.
Far South CDC intends to renovate and infill more than 100 units and a minimum of 50,000 square feet of existing commercial/institutional units.

For more than 10+ years, Far South CDC has been working with the City and the community to advance development in the Roseland community. Roseland has and currently suffering through decades of disinvestment and divestment that have resulted in a reduction in life expectancy for residents by more than ten years compared to other areas of the city.
Within the last few years, Far South CDC has raised more than $25.3 million to develop the Roseland Medical District Master Plan and seed funding for pre-development, working with Roseland Community Hospital in their $55 million transformation plan, advocated for the $3.6 billion CTA Red Line Extension and Transit-Supportive Development, and partnered with Chicago Neighborhood Initiatives and the Greater Roseland Chamber of Commerce to bid on the Invest South/West Initiative for Roseland to develop mixed-use projects along Michigan Avenue.
