Far South CDC is committed to adding and improving public parks and places throughout Chicago's far south side and south suburban Cook County. To date, we have redeveloped 21,780 square feet of vacant land into public outdoor space. Currently, our organization is working to redevelop and enhance 239,580 square feet (5.5 acres) of a new public park and the Major Taylor Trail.
Goal: create and enhance 3 million square feet (69 acres) of parks and public places
Pop! Heights is the first new park on South Halsted in over 50 years. A true amenity for gathering, play, and community. POP! Heights Park is divided into six primary zones of activity all linked by a lively, brightly colored walking ribbon that meanders throughout the site. This ribbon transforms from a walking and exercise path in the morning to a roller-skating ribbon in the evening. The park is flexible and modular, with a stage for events, a half-court basketball court, and space for community markets and food trucks.

The Major Taylor Trail Framework Plan is a City of Chicago-led initiative focused on activating the Major Taylor Trail and catalyzing equitable development in the area. The Trail, named after celebrated African American cyclist Marshall “Major” Taylor, stretches from 82nd St. to the Little Calumet River. The plan will bring together multiple neighborhoods, communities, and stakeholders to find a common vision for the future of the Trail and the surrounding area.
