POP! Heights Park

POP! HEIGHTS PARK @ SHELDON HEIGHTS CHURCH NOW OPEN!

POP! Heights Park will be a 21,780-square-foot community park located at 11227 South Halsted Street and is part of the City of Chicago's Public Outdoor Plaza (POP) program. The program is designed to help community-based organizations revitalize underutilized land along neighborhood retail corridors. Far South Community Development Corporation (Far South CDC) partnered with Sheldon Heights Church of Christ to develop the multi-use outdoor space on one of Chicago's busiest commercial corridors, South Halsted.

The park development is part of Far South CDC's larger vision of the "Bringing Communities Back Initiative" (BCBI), which aims to repurpose vacant and/or blighted areas into thriving community anchors that will spur economic growth and repopulate communities on Chicago’s far south side that have experienced decades of chronic disinvestment.

POP! Heights Park is divided into six primary zones of activity all linked by a lively, brightly colored walking ribbon that meanders throughout the site. This ribbon transforms from a walking and exercise path in the morning to a roller-skating ribbon in the evening.

Visitors will enjoy

  • a relaxing quiet area with a bosque of trees
  • half basketball court
  • pop-up retail area for a Community Market and/or food trucks
  • community mural along the north property line
  • shared stage area for community performances and classes
  • movable seating blocks
  • upgraded community garden
