In 2014, Greater Roseland West Pullman (GRWP) Food Network established the South Halsted Farmers Market to expand access to fruits and vegetables in food deserts. From July 12 to September 27, 2014, customers had access to a variety of farm fresh fruits and vegetables at affordable prices that were eligible for SNAP/LINK transactions. Our growers included SEEDS, Growing Power, Chicago Lights, Ellis Family Farms, Datson’s Farm, and Schmidt Farms.
In March 2016, Far South CDC acquired GRWP Food Network organization to administer programs to the community. In 2016, Far South CDC is seeking to expand the program to be renamed as the Halsted Neighborhood MarketPlace, which would allow for local small businesses and organizations every Saturday for three months to exhibit their products and services to the community. The market will also include live performances from local musicians; live cooking stations for food sampling; petting zoo for children; education stations regarding healthy living, fitness tips, and home budgeting; guest speakers; fashion shows; and local area networking opportunities.
